I have already outlined the answer to this question on my website: www.christinethecoach.com/answers/what-is-nlp but I want to go into a bit more detail in this post by giving you some examples.
This is all about understanding how the brain works and how people process information. It is about an understanding that everyone sees the world differently.
You have conscious and unconscious thought and you are aware of that.
This is about communication and the language people are using. Have you ever thought “Why is he/she not understanding what I am saying although I am very clear?” This might have different reasons but one of them could be that you are using a different so-called “representation system”. You are basically speaking a different language to that person. Most people prefer one of the following:
A person with a auditory preference might use language like “I hear what you are saying”. or “That rings a bell”.
People having a preference for kinaesthetic might say something like “I feel with you.” or “I am getting in touch soon.”
Examples for that representation system would be “I don’t like the taste of this.”
This language uses the following as an example: “I smell a rat.” or “The sweet smell of success.”
I think you get the gist. So, if you talk to someone, listen to what they are saying and what kind of words they are using. Then try to match their representation system.
We all act on our values and beliefs but sometimes we would like to change a belief. For example, if you think you are not good enough for XYZ. NLP provides techniques that help you change that limiting belief and therefore change your behaviour.
