Eyewink

Today I want to share Davide’s and Ana’s start-up story. They are working on a new device with which you can control your smartphone with an eyewink!

Here is how you can connect with them and get some more information:

Davide and Ana are PhD students in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex. They study Brain-Computer Interfaces, which are systems that allow people to control other devices with only thoughts. These systems can help people with severe motor impediments to regain communication. Even itv showed interest in their product. You can watch and read more here. Here is their guest blog post. Enjoy!

background

EyeWink is a wearable device that connects to your smartphone and allows you to interact with it by means of left and right eye winks. The first prototype was developed and presented at the Hack The Brain hackathon, in London, February 2015. This prototype also won the London Science Museum award, which gave us the opportunity to demo EyeWink at their “You’ve Been Upgraded” exhibition in March. Here, around 3,000 people saw it and showed their interest in EyeWink. That was when we decided to accept the challenge of bringing EyeWink to life (and the public) and start our business.

One of the best things of having our own business is being able to apply our research to the market to help improve people’s lives. EyeWink is not only a cool device that can make your life simpler, but it has a great potential to help people with disabilities to control their smartphones and, virtually, any other device. Our main difficulty at the moment is finding the funding that we need to finalise the design of the wearable device and start its production, and finding business partners to join us in our venture. We are really passionate about our product and believe that it has the potential to change the way in which we currently communicate with our phones and control them.

We also need your direct help! We are currently running a quick survey to know what people think about EyeWink and where and when it will be most useful to you. It will not take more than a couple of minutes to fill and you will be helping us a lot by doing so!

If you want to know more about us, we are all over the social media! The best way to get in touch with us is either by email (info@eyewink.net) or Facebook. But don’t forget to check our website eyewink.net too!
